Inspired by how much wastage there is when milling timber, the aim of the Slice table was to create a piece of furniture which makes the most out of the tree it came from whilst celebrating the beauty of the raw materials. This involved milling timber in alternative ways and utilizing different construction methods to create a table that minimizes timber wastage.
Designing the Slice table began with the intention of celebrating the natural beauty of timber. This evolved into a mission to use construction methods that minimize timber wastage by useing alternative milling techniques, all while maintaining the integrity of the structure.
The Slice Table is constructed with six pieces of silver birch screwed through the centre of each piece to a base board allowing for expansion and contraction of the wood. This method prevents the wood from splitting as it moves.
The legs are sandblasted aluminium to show the rawness of the metal. They are also folded at a 30 degree angle to ensure the table is stable. Since making it, the prototype of the Slice Table has now been exhibited in the London Design Festival 2022, the Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair and Grand Designs 2023.
